Annual Report for 2009
This was a year of considerable growth for CMaD, as we worked to make prayerful and practical use of the significant additional funding received in 2008, and further generous donations amounting to almost £600,000 in 2009. These funds allowed us to support some of the poorest people, especially children, in the developing world. We say thank you to everyone who contributed to this funding.
CMaD increased its support to many projects which provide clean water, better agriculture, shelter, basic education and primary healthcare. It assumed full financial sponsorship of eight nursery and primary schools in Burundi, Cameroon, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and for the Blind and Handicapped School at Mbengui in Cameroon.
During 2009 we also opened a new orphanage at Kamukuwya in Kenya. The charity was also able to support a new building at the Timboni Tiva Children's Home in Kenya, and purchase a new, freehold site for the school in Monrovia, Liberia.

Although our 2009 income from donations and legacies was sharply down on the exceptional 2008, the overall trend of our income year on year is upwards at a sufficient rate - just ! - to support the steadily escalating costs of what we call our long term projects. These are those we believe we should support year on year, and who rely on us completely for sponsorship.
These costs are constantly pressed upwards by the steeply rising costs of basic foodstuffs and materials throughout Africa (with their effect on minimal wage levels there) and a substantial reduction in what the British pound now buys in local currencies.
The grants CMaD made to all projects in 2009 were also at a new high – £840,000. As the chart below shows, a little over half of this spend went to support and develop the orphanages and schools that CMaD assists year after year. This includes feeding the children in their care. Skills and capability training (usually in agriculture), medical, healthcare and sanitation schemes, and other food and water supply projects made up the rest of our spend.

Under UK charity law we have to reserve annually an amount equal to next year's commitments - ie £308,000 for 2010. This represents over half of our 2009 income and we need to receive at least this amount again in 2010 if these long term projects are not to suffer.
Every project is carefully reviewed at least annually via written reports and photographs from the managing organisation, before any further funding is committed. Bigger projects are visited by CMaD or visiting Christadelphian Bible Mission (CBM) co-ordinators, to confirm good governance and the effective use of our funds. The largest directly funded projects are now subject to regular visits and an audit of the organisation, management and financial position.
The cost of running the Fund amounted to 3.5% of income in 2009 (2% in 2008) due in part to necessary legal expenses incurred in changing the status of the Fund to that of a company limited by guarantee, and in producing this new website. We also needed to make more visits to critical projects, though much of these costs are in fact reimbursed by the trustees as personal donations to the Fund.
